A Number     (3/7/00)

Back to Writings

When I think of the Holocaust,

A number appears in my mind. Six million.

But what exactly is six million?

It cannot represent all the pain and suffering,

It cannot express the last hopes of the children.

It cannot help us smell the scent of death.

It is just a number.

A number that, to some, makes us seem like cattle.

But we are not.

For each soul had a story,

And each heart had a prayer.

But those prayers were destroyed by the flames of hatred.

That was the Holocaust.

Six million is just a statistic.

But the murder of our family can’t be.

We must remember each life separately,

Or we will forget them all.

So please, do not remember six million.

Remember one, and one, and one.
